Premier Mark McGowan has welcomed news of the safe start up and operation of the carbon dioxide injection system, at the Chevron-led Gorgon natural gas facility on Barrow Island, aimed at minimising greenhouse gas emissions.
One of the world's largest greenhouse gas mitigation projects ever undertaken by industry has commenced operations.
The project undertaken by Chevron Australia and the Gorgon Joint Venture participants involves safely injecting carbon dioxide underground as part of its processing facilities.
It's expected that once fully operational, the carbon dioxide injection facility will reduce Gorgon's greenhouse gas emissions by about 40 per cent, or more than 100 million tonnes over the life of the injection project.
The injection project formed part of the approvals provided by the Carpenter Labor Government in 2006.
As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:
