Goulburn Mulwaree Council has secured funding from the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) to launch an ambitious illegal dumping education initiative aimed at protecting local environments and promoting responsible waste disposal.
Council expects the bold slogan "Every Dump Hurts" to spark meaningful conversations within the community and raise awareness around the escalating issue of illegal dumping. The program will be rolled out across the entire Goulburn Mulwaree Local Government Area (LGA), targeting key dumping hotspots and encouraging community participation in keeping the region clean by reporting any dumping incidents to Council.
The multi-pronged strategy includes:
- Increased signage to deter illegal activity
- Surveillance cameras to monitor and enforce compliance
- Barriers installed at frequent dumping sites
- Online education resources to raise public awareness, and
- On-the-spot fines for offenders.
Goulburn Mulwaree Council Mayor Nina Dillon says the campaign has given Council a great opportunity to partner with charitable organisations to ease some of the burden associated with the disposal of illegally dumped goods at their premises "The Council firmly believes that community reporting will be the best deterrence for this kind of activity, and we are telling locals if they see something - say something!".
NSW EPA Executive Director of Programs and Innovation Alexandra Geddes, said: "We're proud to be working with Goulburn Mulwaree Council to promote behaviour change through a targeted education program and the installation of enforcement signage."Residents are encouraged to report illegal dumping to Council on (02) 4823 4444 or through the EPA's RIDonline platform.
This initiative supports the Council's continued commitment to sustainability and community wellbeing—empowering locals to make a meaningful impact in preserving Goulburn's natural landscapes.
