Government Ignored Scientists' Advice on Adani

THE CLIMATE COUNCIL, representing the country's leading climate scientists, is calling on the Federal Environment Minister to explain why she signed off on Adani's coal mine.

"Ms Price recently gave the Commonwealth tick of approval to Adani's Carmichael mine. This morning we've heard disturbing news reports that the advice of the government's own scientific experts wasn't followed," said the Climate Council's CEO, Amanda McKenzie.

Earlier this month, Melissa Price told the public that the Adani company had "fully accepted recommendations" made by the CSIRO and Geoscience Australia on the mine's water management plans.

Now Geoscience Australia has provided explosive documents to the ABC listing in detail advice that it says was in fact ignored by Adani.

"Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Environment Minister Melissa Price have repeatedly ignored scientific experts on climate change. The Australian public expects and deserves better," said Ms McKenzie.

"The science is crystal clear: we cannot open new coal mines if we are serious about tackling climate change and protecting the Great Barrier Reef.

"Burning coal drives climate change and Australians are already living with the impact of this. We've just endured the Angriest Summer with temperatures nudging 50 degrees and bushfires ravaging rainforests," she said.

"Adani has the potential to be a carbon bomb. It's time the Federal Government started listening to the scientific experts," she said.
