The Government must move through its internal chaos and commit to re-establishing the important firearms committee at the first sitting of Parliament.
Shadow Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services and firearms committee member, Shane Broad, said the recent instability within the Government and the proroguing of Parliament had terminated all business, placing the committee in limbo.
"It has been a shaky road for the firearms committee with it being disbanded by the Upper House, reinstated by the Lower House, then hearings delayed by the resignation of Adam Brooks," Dr Broad said.
"Now the architect of the Liberal's failed firearms policy Rene Hidding is also gone, we have serious concerns over whether this inquiry will now go ahead because there are no guarantees the Liberals will re-establish the committee.
"Is the Government going to crab walk even further away from a failed policy?
"Many people have made submissions in both the disbanded Upper House committee and the reconstituted Lower House committee and we need assurances from the Government that these efforts aren't going to be wasted.
"The Government can't hide from this important issue and must commit to immediately reinstating the firearms committee at the first sitting of Parliament."
