Governor appoints Wendy Askew to fill casual Senate vacancy

Jeremy Rockliff,Acting Premier

This morning, on the advice of the Government, Governor Kate Warner, appointed Wendy Askew to fill the casual Senate vacancy caused by Senator Bushby's retirement.

Senator Askew's appointment is temporary as the State Parliament is not currently in Session.

When Parliament resumes, and following long established convention, a joint sitting will be held to make the substantive appointment to fill the casual vacancy and Senator Askew will of course be the Liberal Party's nominee at the joint sitting.

I have no doubt Senator Askew will be a fierce advocate to advance Tasmania's interests in the Commonwealth Parliament and I wish her the very best.
