The Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) and Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) welcome the Medical Board of Australia's (MBA) accreditation of their respective Rural Generalist training programs.
This is an important step in implementing Rural Generalist specialist recognition, following the Medical Board's recognition of Rural Generalist Medicine as a new field of speciality practice in September 2025.
Accreditation approves each college's Rural Generalist qualification and establishes the pathway for eligible Rural Generalists to apply to Ahpra for specialist recognition.
ACRRM President Dr Rod Martin says: "Accreditation of our Rural Generalist training programs gives confidence that doctors undertaking Rural Generalist training are being prepared to the highest national standards to deliver comprehensive, advanced and culturally safe care for rural, remote and First Nations communities.
"It also sends a powerful message to medical students and junior doctors that Rural Generalist Medicine is a rewarding, respected and nationally recognised career. It strengthens the appeal of rural generalism at a time when Australia needs more doctors choosing to build long-term careers in rural, remote and First Nations communities."
RACGP President Dr Michael Wright says: "This milestone demonstrates what can be achieved when Australia's general practice colleges work together with a shared commitment to strengthening healthcare for rural and remote communities.
"Rural Generalists and rural GPs play a vital role in Australia's health system, delivering comprehensive care in regional and rural communities where broad skills and continuity of care are essential.
"Recognising their advanced skills will help strengthen the Rural Generalist workforce and improve access to high-quality primary care for people living in rural and remote Australia."
Provisions to enforce the protected title Rural Generalist will be in place from 2027.
When the registration application process for individual doctors is defined, Ahpra and the Colleges will provide further information and support to members.
Eligible doctors will be contacted by their respective colleges when further information is available.
