The latest Tasmanian Prison Service (TPS) Recruit School celebrated their graduation with family and friends at a ceremony in Hobart today as they prepare to start work in TPS facilities across the state.
Acting Minister for Corrections and Rehabilitation, Jo Palmer, said the TPS receives a large number of applications from potential candidates every year, however only a small number possess the qualities required to be successful Correctional Officers.
"Those recruits who graduated today come to their new roles with a combination of dedication, hard work, professionalism, and the right attitude, and should feel very proud of themselves," Minister Palmer said.
"A career in corrections can be challenging, and we make no secret about that, but it can also be incredibly rewarding.
"The role of a Correctional Officer provides a unique opportunity to contribute to the safety of the Tasmanian community by providing offenders with opportunities for rehabilitation, so that their journey to reintegration is much, much easier."
The 13 new Correctional Officers have just completed 11 weeks of intensive training which combines classroom learning and supervised placements within TPS facilities to ensure they are fully equipped to take on their new roles.
"This is the second recruit school to graduate this year, with up to three courses planned for 2024, as the Rockliff Liberal Government continues its strong focus on recruitment to boost the number of people within our correctional workforce," Minister Palmer said.
"This is a win-win for Tasmania – we are keeping our community safe while also providing rewarding jobs for Tasmanians."
