Road safety education for young people, campaigns to help local small businesses and a new community garden are among the activities supported through $33,800 in grants announced by Willoughby City Council.
At its August meeting, the Council approved funding for local organisations under the Grants for the Community Program.
The grants included:
- $7,500 to the Artarmon Progress Association for the 'Love Your Locals' project to support Artarmon businesses during the construction of upcoming major streetscape works
- $4,956 to the Naremburn Progress Association for the proposed Tastes of Naremburn event, which will showcase local businesses
- $1,950 for the Bongalong Street Community Garden to establish a new community garden at Naremburn
- $1200 to Northside Salvation Army Chatswood to provide a table tennis coaching program to disadvantaged youth free of charge
- $7500 to Road Safety Education Limited to provide an evidence-based road safety program targeted to assist young drivers
- $6,000 to non-profit charity Hope in a Suitcase help deliver essential items to foster children including toiletries, pyjamas, books and toys.
- $5000 to Our Lady of Dolours Catholic Primary School to support a community celebration of dance, drama, singing and musical talent
Willoughby City Mayor Tanya Taylor said the Grants for the Community Program added value to worthy community projects.
"Not-for-profit organisations make an outstanding contribution to our community and Willoughby City Council is proud to back them with their ideas and projects.
"The projects which received grants under this funding round will deliver benefits for our entire community."
Council also approved $48,000 in Local Performing Arts Subsidies to Willoughby Band ($18,000), Willoughby Symphony Choir ($20,000) and Willoughby Theatre Co ($10,000).
The Local Performing Arts Subsidies program aspires to raise the profile of community performance groups which demonstrate value to the community.
The Grants for the Community Program is open all year round and applications can be submitted via the Council website. The Local Performing Arts Subsidies are annual payments restricted to Willoughby Band, Willoughby Symphony Choir and Willoughby Theatre Co.
