Granties Maze allowed to open

Council chambers - new columns

Kiama Council is aware that local attraction Granties Maze near Foxground has re-opened to the public.

Council's lawyers confirmed that Granties Maze is allowed to open, as the owner, John Grant, has provided photographic evidence of compliance with court-ordered safety measures at the premises.

Council continues to hold concerns for the safety of members of the public entering the premises.

Kiama Council and John Grant have been to the Land and Environment Court of NSW about this matter on numerous occasions.

In November 2022, the Land and Environment Court ordered that: "The Premises is not to operate and otherwise be closed to the public until Order 2 of the Court's orders dated 22 July 2022 has been fully complied with and confirmation in writing is provided by the Council as to its satisfaction of the same."

Mr Grant has now provided evidence of compliance with Order 2 – which involved erecting safety fences and putting up signs – therefore the premises has been granted permission to open to the public.

As part of the court order, Mr Grant is required to provide Council with photographic evidence demonstrating continued compliance with the Orders on the first day of each month and until further order of the Court.

"While we fully support local businesses to operate, the safety and wellbeing of our community – locals and visitors alike – is paramount," said Kiama Council CEO Jane Stroud.

"We look forward to seeing monthly evidence of Granties' continued compliance in this matter, and the lodgement of the required development applications," said Ms Stroud.
