Greek 200th Celebration

Message from the Lord Mayor, Basil Zempilas on the celebration of 200 years of independence

I would like to share my wholehearted congratulations to the Western Australian Greek Community and the Consulate of Greece in Perth, on the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the independence of the Hellenic Republic.

This occasion holds high significance to Greek communities across Australia and represents a momentous milestone in our history.

The Greek community has had a strong presence in Western Australia since the first Greek settlers who arrived in the late 1800s and it has been flourishing ever since.

I am proud of my Greek heritage and of the spirited Greek community that has been built in Western Australia.

In honour of this significant anniversary the City of Perth will proudly fly the Greek Flag at Council House and light up Council House in blue and white to celebrate the occasion.

This landmark anniversary is a celebration for us all, in unity with Greek communities worldwide - I wish you all eutychismeni 200iii imera anexartisias - Happy 200th Independence Day.

Basil Zempilas

Lord Mayor, City of Perth
