Green light for new Port of Echuca management model

Port of Echuca

Following an extensive review of management options and the local economic and tourism impacts of the Council's tourism activities within the Council-owned and managed Port of Echuca Precinct (PoEP), Council has directed the Chief Executive Officer to commence a transition to the Beneficial Enterprise model.

The Beneficial Enterprise management model is an "arm's length from Council" approach whereby a skills based Board of Directors undertakes management of Council's activities within the PoEP, with fully delegated Council responsibilities but remaining accountable to Council.

Campaspe Shire Mayor, Cr Chrissy Weller said, "Council owns or is responsible for a number of significant enterprises within the Port of Echuca Precinct so we must ensure that the management of these operations is both efficient and effective.

"We believe that the Beneficial Enterprise management model will provide best value for the community while also facilitating and supporting local business growth and tourism opportunities into the long-term future."

The Port of Echuca Beneficial Enterprise, a fully owned subsidiary of Council, to be known as Campaspe Port Enterprise will be established under the Local Government Act.

Following a period with the new Board working closely with Council, transition of PoEP business activities, including the wharf, Discovery Centre and paddlesteamers and other tourism-related activities, is expected to be completed by 1 July 2022.
