Green thumbs get go ahead for Sunday's Community Tree Planting Day

This week's wet weather hasn't put a dampener on plans for Townsville City Council's Community Tree Planting Day this Sunday.

Join Council's Environmental Restoration Team to plant 250 native trees next to Annandale State School to help rehabilitate the area.

Community Health, Safety and Environmental Sustainability Committee chairperson Maurie Soars said the Community Tree Planting Day was a fun way to become involved in conservation.

"This Sunday is a great opportunity to lend a helping hand, improve the area's natural environment and learn about why native plant species are so important to Townsville," Cr Soars said.

"We have a mixture of native species that will be monitored and maintained by Council's Environmental Restoration Team for three months until they become self-sufficient. These plants will provide shade, attract birds and butterflies, and all require low water levels to thrive.

"It's important that all residents in Townsville understand the impacts we can have on the environment – both negative and positive. This event is one of the positive ways we can give back to our city and build towards a healthier future."

Cr Soars said the event would include more than just tree planting.

"Our team will be serving up a free sausage sizzle and there will be native plants available on a first come first serve basis that you can take home as a thank you for lending a hand," he said.

"All you need to do is bring a hat, gloves, closed-in footwear and water. Don't forget to wear sunscreen and be sun smart at the event."

The Community Tree Planting Day will run from 8.30am to 10am this Sunday (15 May 2022) at Annandale State School along Casuarina Drive.
