Greens move to repeal lockout laws

Greens MLC Cate Faehrmann has moved to repeal the lockout laws which prevent patrons from entering a venue in the inner city and Kings Cross after 1:30 am.

"Sydney's lockout laws were a blunt instrument that have decimated Sydney's nightlife. Businesses have closed, hundreds of people have lost their jobs and many of our most creative people have moved interstate," said Ms Faehrmann.

"Yet a number of peer-reviewed studies into the effectiveness of lockout laws state that it's inconclusive as to whether it's lockouts themselves that prevent violence.

"It has been found it's the other measures that have been put in place around the time of lockout laws, like banning shots after midnight, RSA marshalls, CCTV at all entry and exit points and ID scanners that play more of a role in preventing alcohol-related violence.

"I welcome the Premier's review into lockout laws and look forward to working constructively with the government to ensure that Sydney once again becomes a fun and safe city to go out in at night," said Ms Faehrmann.
