Greens should support Tasmanian timber processing

The comments by Green groups about timber processing in Tasmania are rank hypocrisy.

If the Greens are concerned about forestry practices in Asia, they should welcome companies looking to process Tasmanian timber which is harvested under world-leading forest management standards.

The Greens have consistently criticised wood-chip and log exports. Now they criticise a proposal to add value to wood that is currently being exported as chips or whole logs, with the promise of more than 100 jobs.

No harvesting can occur in Tasmania’s forest industry unless it complies with our world-leading forest management standards.

Furthermore, we are advised that proponents will be seeking to purchase wood from existing harvesting operations.

Downstream processing in this industry is welcome as it will create jobs and add further economic value to our wood.
