Gutwein just can't be trusted on asset sales as he tries to rewrite history

Tasmanian Labor

Peter Gutwein is not to be trusted with Tasmania's public assets after trying to rewrite history on the Liberals' plan to sell the Tamar Valley Power Station and peddling blatant mistruths on the pending sale of Hydro assets.

Labor Leader Rebecca White said in today's Advocate debate Peter Gutwein claimed that his government had never tried to sell energy assets despite clear evidence otherwise.

In 2015 as Treasurer and shareholding Minister of Hydro, Peter Gutwein put the Tamar Valley Power Station on the market.

And as recently as March this year as Treasurer and shareholding Minister of Hydro, Peter Gutwein put Momentum on the market.

In Parliament in March this year when asked a direct question about whether he would rule out the sale of Momentum Energy and Entura Mr Gutwein said:

"… I will not rule that out … the Energy minister has made the point that at the end of the day if they go down that path that is something that we would consider… As to the question that Mr O'Byrne asked – would I rule things in or out? No, at the end of the day, I will not."

"Tasmanians just cannot believe a word Peter Gutwein says when he claims he won't privatise and sell energy assets," Ms White said.

"He cannot rewrite history, he cannot alter the fact that he has put assets up for sale only recently and intends to go through with those sales and he cannot expect Tasmanians to now believe him when the truth is clear."
