HAFF Round 3: 21,000 New Social, Affordable Homes

The Property Council of Australia has today welcomed Round 3 of the Housing Australia Future Fund, which is due to deliver more than 21,000 new social and affordable homes.

Property Council Chief Executive Mike Zorbas said this funding is a potent boost to the nation's housing supply in the gap where it really helps people in need.

"Round 3 is a significant step toward boosting housing supply for those who need it the most.

"We've been stuck in reverse on social housing for a quarter of a century.

"Governments around the country have been selling off and underfunding social housing under the radar.

"The HAFF has yet to hit top gear, but this positive program needs everyone's buy-in.

"At the same time as HAFF is gaining traction, the attention of state and territory governments must now be directed to delivering these and many more homes needed to hit our national housing targets.

"Even when new homes and essential new property projects of every type are approved, there are far too many delays that delay delivery and make them more expensive.

"Among the worst offenders are water and power utilities, and a small number of laggard councils, who have often been the cause of multi-year delays for approved industrial, commercial and residential projects.

"At the national level, we need to immediately reform ASIC guidelines to remove the distortion that blocks up to 7,000 new homes a year from being built," he said.
