Halls Creek Oval Upgrade Resumes

  • Cook Government commits further funding to deliver stalled Halls Creek oval upgrades, bringing total investment to over $1 million
  • Control group established to support Shire of Halls Creek to complete the project
  • Oval upgrades to enable the return of community football in 2026
  • Part of the Cook Government's commitment to improving infrastructure and services in our regional and remote communities

The State Government will provide further funding to ensure long-awaited upgrades to the Halls Creek oval are delivered for the community in time for the 2026 local football season.

The funding boost will enable the Shire of Halls Creek to complete turf and irrigation upgrades at the oval and takes the State Government's contribution to the project to nearly $1,050,000.

The Shire of Halls Creek had previously received $595,758 through the 2023-24 Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF) towards the project but it has been unable to proceed.

In addition to the funding, a project control group including State Government representatives, has been established to provide support to the Shire to ensure the oval upgrade can be delivered efficiently and enable community football to return to the oval next year.

The project is part of the Cook Government's PlayOn WA: 2030 by 2030 initiative, which is driving the delivery of quality community sport and recreation infrastructure across the State.

PlayOn WA aims to foster healthier, more connected communities by ensuring Western Australians - no matter where they live - have access to high quality sporting facilities.

As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister Rita Saffioti:

"The Halls Creek oval has long been at the heart of its community - it's where people come together to play, catch up and stay connected.

"We know how important this project is for local football clubs, families and young people in this community, which is why the WA Government has thrown in additional funding to ensure that the upgrades can be delivered following advocacy from local Member Divina D'Anna.

"Our additional investment, alongside strengthened project oversight, means we can get this project moving again and make sure the community has a quality, safe and sustainable playing surface for the long-term."

As stated by Kimberley MLA Divina D'Anna:

"It's so important that Western Australians in our remote communities have access to quality local infrastructure that brings people together and fosters happier, healthier communities.

"The Halls Creek community has been patiently awaiting the completion of these oval upgrades, and our government is proud to be supporting the Shire to get the job done after the project has faced several setbacks.

"Halls Creek may be a tiny town, but it has been the training ground that has launched some incredible professional football careers over the years with sport a huge part of this community.

"We are all looking forward to football returning to Halls Creek in 2026 and seeing the new and improved oval become a thriving hub for the community once again."
