Have cracker New Year's by leaving fireworks to professionals

Minister for Resources The Honourable Scott Stewart

Queenslanders wanting to ring the New Year in with a bang are urged to leave fireworks to the professionals and stick to legal public fireworks displays.

Resources Minister Scott Stewart said Queenslanders could celebrate safely at one of more than 130 organised firework displays across the state.

"It wouldn't be a New Year's Eve celebration without fireworks, but we do not want to see the night ruined by serious injury or worse resulting from using fireworks illegally," he said.

"Queenslanders can enjoy a safe and spectacular fireworks display at South Bank, the Strand or at one of many other public New Year's celebrations across the state."

Mr Stewart said Queenslanders should also keep an eye out for pets and animals this New Year's as they can become frightened or distressed by firework noises.

"It's easy to forget some creatures don't enjoy fireworks like the rest of us, so if you have an at-risk pet remember to keep them comfortable and secure at home."

Fines of up to $50,000 apply to Queenslanders who possess or set off fireworks who are not licenced operators.

This year more than 440kg of fireworks were removed from the Queensland community, some of which were voluntary surrenders.

Mr Stewart said it's never too late to voluntarily surrender illegal fireworks to Resources Safety and Health Queensland without prosecution.

"Don't risk Queenslander's safety this New Year's. If you are in possession of illegal fireworks, do the right thing and surrender them by calling 1300 739 868," he said.

Queenslanders who are aware of anyone selling or using fireworks illegally are urged to report it to Policelink by calling 131 444.
