The popular skate park at Dicky Beach is set to receive an upgrade and council is calling on skaters, BMXers and scooter riders to provide input that will help shape the design of new skate elements for the park.
The skate park will be retained as part of Sunshine Coast Council's Dicky Beach Precinct Plan developed in response to the partial removal of the SS Dicky wreck in 2015.
The announcement comes on the back of a feasibility process based on recommendations in council's skate and BMX plan,
Division 2 Councillor Tim Dwyer said the Dicky Beach Precinct plan aimed to reflect council's healthy, smart, creative vision by focusing on improving access to the beach, opening up the park for improved recreational use, improving sight lines to the beach and interpretive elements, and allowing for an upgrade to the amenities building and the skate park facility.
"After a thorough process which included considering the outcomes of the initial 2016 community consultation, reviewing the use and mix of park facilities, amenities and recreation opportunities within the Dicky Beach Precinct, and exploring potential alternative locations, council has determined that the current skate park location best fits the community's needs," Cr Dwyer said.
"I am pleased to say that, as well as a host of other improvements at this iconic Sunshine Coast location, we will deliver a greatly improved, high-quality and contemporary skate facility in Dicky Beach Park.
"To make sure we deliver on this commitment, we are seeking community input on design features for the new skate park via an online survey.
"We will use this information to help create a design that works for the community, the site and the overall budget for the Dicky Beach Precinct Plan.
"I am confident we can deliver an outstanding facility that will be better incorporated within the surrounding park and facilities to ensure that Dicky Beach Park remains a destination people of all ages will visit for many years to come."
As part of the Dicky Beach Precinct Plan, the upgraded skate park will complement a host of other improvements in the area including a new public amenities building, new viewing areas, new pathways, new picnic shelters, an upgraded playground, new showers, new seating, new bus stops and an SS Dicky wreck interpretive area.
Feedback on the skate park design can be submitted via the online survey on council's website.
The survey will close at 5pm, Friday, March 29, 2019.
Construction for the Dicky Beach Precinct Plan is expected to start in 2020 and will be completed in stages, subject to funding.
The following draft construction schedule has been developed, subject to annual funding confirmation:
- 2020: New public amenities building constructed.
- 2021: Skate park reconfigured and upgraded.
- 2022: Main SS Dicky interpretive area constructed and new Coastal Pathway alignment to be constructed.
- 2023: Car park reconfigured. New caravan park fence (east) with interpretive components constructed.
