Hazard reduction burn in Biamanga National Park

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and NSW Rural Fire Service are conducting a hazard reduction burn Monday 19 April in Biamanga National Park.

NPWS South Coast Director Kane Weeks said the planned hazard reduction burn is 133 hectares in size, adjacent to the Honeymoon Fire Trail in the Cuttagee Area.

"This burn is in a strategic location and will help protect both visitors to the park and limit the potential spread of wildfire to surrounding private properties around the Cuttagee area south of Bermagui area," Mr Weeks said.

"Local NPWS crews will be assisted by the NSW Rural Fire Service.

"Biamanga National Park is under the care and control of a Board of Management. In May 2006, the park was returned to its traditional custodians as part of a joint management agreement with NPWS," said Mr Weeks.

Bunja Smith, Chair of Biamanga Board acknowledged the importance of the hazard reduction burn for community safety and said that a number of cultural burns are also planned that will be done with the support of the Aboriginal community.

To ensure visitor safety while the burn is underway, parts of Biamanga National Park will be closed during the operation.

Closures will be listed on the National Parks website at NPWS local alerts.

Depending on conditions, other burns may be carried out across the south coast region in coming weeks so smoke may be visible for several days.

People with asthma or who are susceptible to respiratory conditions are advised to keep clear of the area or stay indoors.

This burn is one of many that NPWS is working to carry out across the NSW south coast region this autumn, and is an example of the many hazard reduction operations undertaken by NPWS across NSW each year.
