The NSW Rural Fire Service is planning to conduct a Hazard Reduction (HR) burn in Killingworth from approximately 11am on Saturday 9 May, weather permitting.

The Newcastle Substation IMZ HR burn is located west of Killingworth Road, Killingworth, to the east of The M1 Motorway and to the north of Killingworth township. The burn is approximately 8.3 hectares in size. The map is an indication of the general burn area, and the boundaries are not precise.

These activities will consist of prescribed burning of vegetation to reduce the bush fire fuel and assist in reducing the intensity and adverse impact of bush fires in extreme weather conditions.

If weather conditions become unfavourable on the planned day, the HR burn will be rescheduled.

Safety precautions

As the prescribed burn will generate smoke, hot embers and heat, it is important that you consider the following:

  • Keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke entering homes
  • Outdoor items such as furniture and trampolines should be either taken inside or covered. Where this is not practical, items should be hosed down regularly to prevent ember damage
  • Retract pool covers to prevent ember damage
  • Remove washing from clotheslines
  • Ensure pets have a protected area
  • If you are driving a vehicle, slow down, keep windows up and turn headlights on
  • Obey the instructions of traffic controllers and emergency services
  • Sightseers must keep away from burns for their own safety
  • If you have asthma or a lung condition, reduce outdoor activities. If shortness of breath or coughing develops, take your reliever medicine or seek medical advice.
