Hazard reduction burns in Yuraygir National Park

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has scheduled a planned burn on Thursday 23 April in Yuraygir National Park in the North Coast's Clarence Valley region to reduce bushfire risk to Minnie Water and Illaroo campground.

Hazard reduction burn

The NPWS hazard reduction program for 2020 focusses on essential burns to protect park neighbours, assets or significant habitat to ensure ongoing recovery of the wildlife impacted by the summer bushfires.

Around 195 hectares are set to burn in the Minnie Water North-west Hazard Reduction on Thursday to reduce fuel loads in bushland north-west of the village of Minnie Water and Illaroo campground.

As one of the few spots not directly affected by fire in that part of the Clarence Valley over summer, reducing fuel load is key to helping protect nearby assets in potential future fires, including coastal villages, park visitor facilities and natural assets.

Illaroo Campground Road will be closed and drivers in the area are asked to use caution. NPWS and NSW RFS crews plan to undertake the burn on Thursday and continue with mop-up and patrol on Friday.

All burns across NSW continue to be coordinated with the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) to ensure the impact on the community, including from smoke, are assessed at a regional level. Details on specific burns will be made available in advance on the Rural Fire Service website, 'Fires Near Me' app, and on NPWS Alerts website.

All hazard reduction burns over 50 hectares will be assessed by the NSW RFS in conjunction with NSW Health as required to ensure smoke impacts are minimised.
