The Hobart City Council Planning Authority Committee has approved a development application for demolition, new building and associated infrastructure works for extension and alterations to visitor accommodation, restaurant, car parking and function space, and subdivision for 171 Macquarie Street, 167-169 Macquarie Street, 173 Macquarie Street and adjacent road reserve.

The application includes the demolition of the existing building at 171 Macquarie Street and part of the adjoining Travelodge to enable a new 14-level mixed-use development integrated with the existing Ibis Hotel. The proposal includes 36 new hotel rooms or apartments, a ground-floor restaurant, function and bar facilities, and 105 parking spaces, including 82 spaces within a multi-level parking podium and 23 basement spaces. The development would also feature public art, pedestrian links to the existing hotel and boundary adjustments to consolidate the site into two lots.

Officer level development applications approved between 29 September to 13 October 2026

Between Hobart City Council Planning Authority Committee meetings, the City's Planning Officers are busy reviewing a range of residential and commercial development applications for Hobart.

Since the last meeting, 15 development applications delegated to council officers were also approved while 19 development applications are currently being advertised.

A reminder that the Council has a planner on duty during office hours which members of the community can call through our Customer Services to check to see whether any development or work to a garden will require planning approval.
