Unit 2, 55A Newdegate Street, West Hobart

The Hobart City Council Planning Authority Committee has considered a development application for change of use to visitor accommodation for Unit 2, 55A Newdegate Street, West Hobart. The vote was tied, meaning the application will now be delegated to officer level for a decision.

If approved, the proposal involves changing an existing residential dwelling to visitor accommodation, with no other strata units used for this purpose, and includes one car parking space in the existing garage.

Macquarie Point Precinct - Planning Scheme Amendment

The Planning Authority Committee has supported updates to Hobart's planning scheme to align it with the State Government's approved plans for the Macquarie Point development, including the stadium. The changes simply ensure the local planning rules match the State Order that approved the project. Further planning changes are expected in the future to guide the full development of the Macquarie Point Precinct and surrounding areas, and those will include opportunities for public input. The Planning Authority Committee noted Council's previous opposition to the stadium project, acknowledged the Tasmanian Planning Commission's recommendation against it, and advised that any required amendments to the Local Provision Schedule should only occur once contracts are signed and the Macquarie Point Precinct Project has substantially commenced.

Draft Amendment 01-2026 of the State Planning Provisions Secondary Residences

The Hobart City Council Planning Authority Committee has endorsed its submission supporting the State Government's proposed changes to increase the maximum size of secondary residences (formerly known as "ancillary dwellings" and often referred to as a "granny flat") to 90 square metres, recognising the benefits for housing diversity, ageing in place and multigenerational living.

Officer level development applications approved between 16 March and 27 March 2026

Between Hobart City Council Planning Authority Committee meetings, the City's Planning Officers are busy reviewing a range of residential and commercial development applications for Hobart.

Since the last meeting, 14 development applications delegated to council officers were also approved while 17 development applications are currently being advertised.

A reminder that the Council has a planner on duty during office hours which members of the community can call through our Customer Services to check to see whether any development or work to a garden will require planning approval.
