Healthcare workers rally against 'disgraceful' introduction of paid parking at Campbelltown Hospital

Healthcare workers have used their lunch break to rally against the introduction of paid parking at Campbelltown Hospital.

The NSW Government spent $34.1 million of taxpayers' money building the new multi-level carpark but has now handed it over to a private operator who will charge those same taxpayers to use it.

Staff will be charged almost $50 a fortnight to park at their workplace while patients and visitors will have to pay up to $20.20 per day.

Health Services Union NSW Secretary Gerard Hayes has slammed the move as "disgraceful" and is calling on the NSW Government to reverse its decision.

"Our healthcare heroes have put their own lives at risk for the community during the pandemic and we are rewarding them by making them pay almost $50 a fortnight to park at their workplace," Mr Hayes said.

"The NSW Government already slashed their promised pay rise and now healthcare workers will be even further out of pocket.

"This is a sneaky backdoor tax on infrastructure that has already been paid for by NSW taxpayers.

"In the middle of the COVID vaccination rollout, our healthcare heroes are more important than ever. This decision needs to be reversed immediately."
