The IEA recently held an online workshop to advance the development of common definitions and classifications for heat pump technologies.
About 30 representatives from manufacturers, industry associations, public statistical agencies and the research community took part in the event. They discussed the heat pump taxonomy that is currently being developed by the IEA in consultation with stakeholders, which aims to support market development and the provision of reliable information for policymaking and research by improving and harmonising the collection of data.
The workshop, held on 26 June, dove into critical elements of the taxonomy. Participants discussed reporting data on technologies such as reversible air-to-air and hybrid units, as well as opportunities to expand the collection of data to other heat pump components such as refrigerants. It also included a session specifically focussed on heat pump capacity data - a key indicator for understanding the state of the market and developing tailored policy initiatives.
The taxonomy will continue to develop over the coming weeks, and additional discussions are scheduled for a follow-up workshop in late July. Once the taxonomy is completed, the IEA will publish an interactive online tool allowing users to access a comprehensive range of heat pump information data reported at the global and regional level, as well as by technology type.
