Witnesses at the Ryan John Café in Heathridge reported the alleged incident to RSPCA WA. They claim the accused dropped the Mastiff cross puppy from hip height onto brick paving twice – once after lifting him by the tail and the other after lifting him by the legs - and that the puppy was yelping in pain and showing signs of fear.
RSPCA WA inspectors attend the accused's home where they say the puppy was exhibiting distress evidenced by severe, abnormal behavioural reactions. The puppy was seized with subsequent vet examinations revealing symptoms consistent with trauma.
The accused will appear in the Joondalup Magistrates Court on 6 February.
She has been charged under sections 19(1) and 19(2)(a) of the Animal Welfare Act 2002. RSPCA WA will allege she was cruel to the puppy by abusing and otherwise ill-treating him.
She joins five other accused currently facing dog and puppy beating charges stemming from incidents in Busselton, Yangebup, Armadale and Melville.
Additionally, RSPCA WA has successfully prosecuted three people for dog and puppy beatings in the last 12months (see below).
The maximum penalty for a conviction of animal cruelty under the Animal Welfare Act 2002 is a $50,000 fine and five years' imprisonment.
Members of the public who witness or suspect animal cruelty are urged to report it on 1300 CRUELTY (1300 278 358) or online at rspcawa.org.au/report-cruelty.
