Severe thunderstorms with localised heavy rainfall, damaging winds and large hail are possible across the northern interior of New South Wales this weekend.
As a coastal trough deepens and a low-pressure system forms in the Tasman Sea, coastal showers and widespread rain are expected to develop across the northeast of New South Wales from Monday.
The focus of the rainfall will initially be across the northern coast including the Northern Rivers and Mid North Coast.
During the week this may extend further south to the Hunter, Sydney and Illawarra districts.
Widespread moderate rainfall totals are likely each day this weekend in these areas, with locally intense and higher totals possible, particularly with severe thunderstorms which are likely to produce localised flash flooding and possibly riverine flooding.
Flood warnings are current for the Culgoa, Bokhara, Birrie and Narran rivers as well as the Wollombi Brook, including major flooding at Angledool on the Narran River.
The flood risk will shift from localised flash flooding to more pronounced riverine flooding across the Mid North Coast and Northern Rivers, as well as potentially across the Northwest Slopes and Plains. Flash flood risk continues throughout the week in the east. The Flood Watch may be upgraded over the coming days.
