Hedland Launches Creative Naming Contest

  • Name the Cranes competition launched today
  • Cranes will form a central part of managing operations at the landmark Lumsden Point project

The Cook Government and Pilbara Ports are calling on the Hedland community to take part in a unique opportunity - naming the impressive new mobile harbour cranes at the Port of Port Hedland's Lumsden Point development.

The 'Name the Cranes' competition invites locals to put their creativity to work and submit a name that captures the innovation and spirit of the region.

Currently under construction and soon to be standing 84 metres tall, these two new cranes will be an integral part of managing operations at Lumsden Point, facilitating the export of battery metals, the import of renewable energy infrastructure, and the growth of direct shipping services to the Pilbara.

Combined, the cranes will deliver a lifting capacity at 400-tonnes and feature leading hybrid technology to improve efficiency and reduce on-site exhaust and noise emissions.

The contract to supply and construct the two ESP.9 Konecranes Gottwald Mobile Harbor Cranes was awarded to Konecranes in December 2024.

Construction has begun and the cranes will be delivered to Lumsden Point fully assembled in mid-2026.

The Australian Government is investing $565 million in common-user port upgrades in the Pilbara, $450 million of which will enable the development of new multi-user facilities and berths at Lumsden Point. This is in partnership with the Cook Government, which is contributing $96.6 million to the project.

The competition is now open to members of the Hedland community until 27 August, to enter and for more details visit Name the new Lumsden Point cranes - Pilbara Ports
