Eight unique neighbourhood character area types have been identified in Nillumbik's residential areas in Council's draft Neighbourhood Character Strategy, which is now open for community and stakeholder feedback for 6 weeks.

Residents are encouraged to explore the proposed neighbourhood character type for their property or street by using our interactive online tool at Participate Nillumbik. Written feedback can then be shared by completing an online feedback form, or providing a written submission until 11.59pm Monday 10 October.

Neighbourhood character is what makes one neighbourhood look different to another in relation to landscape, vegetation and the built environment.

Informed by a first round of community consultation earlier this year, Council has been developing the first draft of a new Neighbourhood Character Strategy to update and accurately reflect the existing and preferred neighbourhood character in residential areas of the Shire, including the rural townships. It will outline how new development should 'fit in' and respond to an area's particular neighbourhood character.

Nillumbik Mayor Frances Eyre said that once adopted, the new Strategy would be an important planning policy document to guide development within the Shire's residential zones.

"This will help strengthen Council's ability to protect and enhance the individual character of our neighbourhood areas," Cr Eyre said.

"Thanks to everyone who has shared their thoughts and opinions so far, it's been a really important part of understanding the character of each area".

"I'd like to really encourage you to now read the draft Strategy and share your feedback."

Council will be holding a series of in-person and online information sessions about the draft Strategy, with the opportunity for community members to ask questions and provide feedback.

At participate.nillumbik.vic.gov.au/neighbourhood-character-strategy you will find a wealth of resources; you can search your property, find out about and book in to attend an information session and provide feedback.
