Moira Shire Council is inviting residents, volunteers and emergency services personnel to help preserve the story of the January 2026 Yarroweyah fire event.
Council is looking to record interviews, collect photographs, videos or personal reflections from those affected by the fires. The project will create a lasting community record of the experiences, challenges, resilience and recovery that followed 09 January 2026.
A film crew from Shon Productions will be in Moira Shire from Friday 28 August to Sunday 30 August to capture stories from across the community.
Council is encouraging anyone who experienced the fires, supported response efforts or played a role in recovery to consider contributing.
Moira Shire Council Chair Administrator Dr Graeme Emonson PSM said supporting recovery remains a priority for Council.
"Rebuilding infrastructure and restoring services are important acts for the community, however recovery is about more than that. It is also about recognising experiences, acknowledging loss, honouring emergency efforts, while also preserving community history and ensuring important stories are not lost," Dr Emonson said.
"Projects like this provide an opportunity for people to reflect on their experiences, acknowledge the challenges faced and celebrate the strength shown by communities during and after the event."
The documentary will be told through the voices of residents, volunteers and emergency services personnel. It will help detail an important chapter in Moira Shire's history while creating a resource for future generations.
Community members can submit photographs, videos or recordings, written stories and other materials that help tell the story of the January fire.
