The Andrews Labor Government is working with the Victorian horticulture, garden and nursery industry to support innovation and growth.
Minister for Agriculture Jaclyn Symes toured nursery and garden sites in Melbourne's south-east with the Nursery and Garden Institute of Victoria to discuss various elements of the nursery and cut-flower industries supply chain - from propagation and seed importation through to plant production and retail.
Victoria's horticulture industry is comprised of approximately 3500 businesses, producing 45 per cent of Australia's horticulture exports - worth almost $1.15 billion.
The nursery tour will help to inform agricultural research and operational and policy decisions, as well as help the Labor Government identify and capitalise on opportunities that boost jobs and strengthen Victoria's economy.
The success of Victorian garden businesses is thanks to the strong uptake of innovative practices including the use of technology to upscale production, and measures to prioritise sustainability and address challenges such as climate change and biosecurity risks.
This tour builds on the Labor Government's unprecedented $142.5 million investment to boost the state's biosecurity system, keeping our agricultural sector secure and preventing the spread of pests and diseases.
