Major works have started on the Henderson Road and Ferntree Gully Road Intersection Upgrade in Knoxfield.
Fully funded by the Albanese Government, the upgrade will improve safety, reduce congestion and make journeys more reliable for the 40,000 drivers who travel through this section of Ferntree Gully Road each day.
The extensive upgrade includes:
- Adding a left turn slip lane out of Henderson Road onto Ferntree Gully Road.
- Extending the existing and adding an extra right turn lane into Henderson Road from Ferntree Gully Road.
- Extending the existing right turn lane and the left turn slip lane into St Laurent Rise from Ferntree Gully Road.
- Widening the existing left turn lane into Harley Street from Ferntree Gully Road
- Adding bicycle priority crossings and bicycle traffic lights.
These improvements will increase capacity at the intersection, ease pressure during peak periods, support growing traffic demands in the area and improve safety for all road users.
The works are being delivered by Fulton Hogan in partnership with Big Build Roads Victoria.
To safely deliver the works, temporary traffic changes will be in place.
There will be no access to St Laurent Rise from Ferntree Gully Road until mid-May. During this time, drivers can access the estate via Kathryn Road or O'Connor Road, connecting through Laura Road, Rickards Avenue and Eden Grove.
Ferntree Gully Road will be reduced to one lane in each direction at the intersection, with reduced speed limits in place.
From 8pm, Monday 16 March until late April, Henderson Road and Harley Street will both be closed at Ferntree Gully Road. Detours will be in place during this time, and motorists are advised to allow additional travel time to their journeys.
The project builds on the successful 2023 upgrade of the nearby Henderson Road and Kelletts Road intersection, which has significantly improved traffic flow, travel times and safety.
This upgrade will be completed in late 2026, weather permitting, and is fully funded through the Australian Government's $14.26 million commitment to the Henderson Road Upgrades project.
