The Heritage Post Box at Pioneer Settlement has been carefully restored by Australian artist Mick Slocum, preserving an important piece of local history for the community and visitors to enjoy
Mr Slocum, has spent the past two years travelling across the state restoring colonial-era postboxes, known as pillar boxes as part of a passionate, self-driven heritage project. His work focuses on bringing these pieces back to life, carefully stripping away layers of paint and returning them to their original vibrant colours and historic detail.
The post box remains an active mailbox and a valued feature at the entrance to the Pioneer Settlement, reflecting the region's rich history and offering visitors a glimpse into early postal services in Australia. The restoration work has preserved its original character while ensuring it can be enjoyed by future generations.
Mayor Cr Stuart King said the project highlights the importance of protecting and celebrating local heritage.
"Pioneer Settlement is a living window into our past, and the restoration of the Heritage Post Box is a wonderful example of how we can preserve and showcase that history.
"We are incredibly fortunate to have someone of Mick Slocum's passion and expertise contribute to this project. His work is not only about restoration, but about reconnecting communities with pieces of history that might otherwise be forgotten," Cr King said.
Originally introduced in the 1850s, pillar boxes played a vital role in communication before the advent of telephones and digital technology, serving as key infrastructure across towns and cities.
Mr Slocum's restoration work continues to attract widespread interest and admiration, with his efforts helping to revive an important part of Victoria's streetscape and cultural identity.
