Eleven significant mid century modern homes and fourteen community buildings in Beaumaris and Black Rock will be considered for heritage protection as a result of Council's voluntary heritage nomination process.
The 11 private properties were nominated by their owners and have been identified as having heritage merit in a preliminary assessment of their architectural significance. Fourteen Council buildings will also be assessed to determine whether they demonstrate characteristics that may warrant heritage protection
Bayside Mayor, Cr Michael Heffernan said the voluntary nominations showed Council had successfully struck a balance between protecting Bayside's valuable heritage buildings and respecting the views of property owners.
"I am delighted that the owners of these potentially significant mid century modern properties have put them forward to be comprehensively assessed. This is an important first step to protect Bayside's mid century heritage for future generations.
"The voluntary process establishes a model that responds to our aspirations to protect Bayside's built heritage while respecting the concerns of property owners," he said.
The Council owned properties include Black Rock Hall, Olive Phillips Kindergarten, Beaumaris Maternal Health Centre, Beaumaris Bowls Club, Sea Scouts and the Beaumaris Library/Tennis Club/Tennis Club precinct on Reserve Road.
The mid-century modern heritage voluntary inclusion process was introduced in late 2018 to strike a balance between the protection of significant heritage buildings and opposition from property owners.
