High Court backs Unions NSW in decision

Unions NSW

Unions NSW welcomes today's High Court decision to overturn a ban on unions spending more than $20,000 in NSW by-elections. The cap was so low that it effectively prevented unions and other third parties from being involved by-elections. The NSW Coalition government had also sought to block unions from co-ordinating political campaigns with individuals and community groups before dropping a ban on pooling resources last year. Unions NSW Secretary Mark Morey welcomed today's 6-1 High Court decision as a victory for political freedom. "Today the High Court has once again ruled that legislation aimed at silencing the government's critics is not valid," he said. "Everyone in our democracy - from unions to community groups - should have the chance to have their voices heard. "We are delighted with this result which upholds vital freedoms granted by our constitution."
