High Court Ruling Ignored as VicRoads Persist Charging EV Users

Liberal Party Victoria

Yesterday, the High Court humiliated the Victorian Government by determining that its Electric Vehicle Tax is unconstitutional.

The decision left the State Government in disarray, with the Premier and Treasurer unable to confirm whether Victorians who had paid the charge would receive a refund.

In further confusion, VicRoads has now advised electric vehicle drivers that despite the High Court ruling, "motorists who are due to renew their zero and low emission vehicle registration should continue to do so".

As electric vehicle drivers know, the registration process requires attestation of kilometre usage of a vehicle and payment.

Shadow Minister for Environment and Climate Change, James Newbury, said: "The Labor Government must immediately confirm that VicRoads will pause the collection of the Electric Vehicle Tax as part of the registration process".

"Victoria has become an international laughing stock on electric vehicle policy. Sadly, we will all lose out, because the Labor Government is in chaos".
