High Range Speeding Offence, Biddeston

A Wilsonton man has been fined and had his licence suspended after allegedly being detected travelling 51km/h over the speed limit at Biddeston on June 10.

Police were conducting patrols on Toowoomba Cecil Plains Road at around 2.25pm when they intercepted a 2018 Hyundai Accent allegedly travelling at 151km/h in a 100km/h zone.

The 27-year-old driver was issued with a traffic infringement notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 40km/h. He was fined $1,919, incurred eight demerit points and had his licence suspended for six months.

Oakey Officer in Charge Sergeant James Leahy said excessive speeding remained one of the most dangerous behaviours on local roads.

"Driving at such excessive speeds dramatically reduces a driver's ability to react to unexpected situations and significantly increases the severity of a crash," Sergeant Leahy said.

"At those speeds, even a minor error can have catastrophic consequences, placing the driver, passengers and other road users at serious risk.

"We know the devastating impact road trauma has on families and communities. Every offence detected is an opportunity to prevent a tragedy from occurring on our roads.

"Motorists can expect to see police continuing to proactively target dangerous driving behaviour as part of our commitment to keeping the community safe."

As of June 10, 140 lives have been lost on Queensland roads including 15 in Darling Downs District.

The Queensland Police Service is committed to reducing the number of lives lost on our roads.

As part of Operation Interpose, police are bolstering high-visibility patrols right across the state, engaging with road users and enforcing the laws to deter dangerous driving behaviours.

Queenslanders can expect police – anywhere, anytime. However, enforcement alone cannot stop all dangerous driving behaviours.

Driving under the influence, speeding, driving distracted or while fatigued, or not wearing a seatbelt puts your life – and the lives of others – at serious risk. These dangerous behaviours will not be tolerated.

Road safety starts with you.
