History and heritage professionals appointed to Register of Peers

NT Government

Eight history and heritage professionals have been appointed to the Territory Labor Government's History Grants and Awards Register of Peers for the next three years.

Members will provide subject matter expertise which will assist Library & Archives NT with its annual history grants and awards.

The register allows the best Territory experts in these fields to assess both grants and awards, increasing efficiency.

Together, the new peers have an immense knowledge of the Territory's history and heritage. They are:

Museum and Art Gallery of the NT (MAGNT), NT History Curator, Jared Archibald;MAGNT former registrar, archaeologist and cultural heritage specialist, Christine Tarbett-Buckley;Professional Historians Association NT executive member Dr Wendy Beresford-Maning;Anthropologist and historian Jennifer McFarland (Alice Springs);Darwin High School history teacher Judy Boland;Nightcliff Primary School former principal Jillian Finch;NT Heritage Branch Director Michael Wells; andNT Heritage Branch Senior Heritage Officer Dr Sam Wells.

The peers will make recommendations for the forthcoming annual History Grants, and also form a judging panel for the annual Chief Minister's Northern Territory History Book Award.

Previously judges were appointed for each award and grant program, but the new register will streamline the process and ensure the best pool of people with appropriate expertise is available.

Quotes attributable to Acting Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage, Selena Uibo:

"This register means that we have a superb group of history and heritage professionals from the Northern Territory available to judge the history grants and the Chief Minister's Northern Territory History Book Award.

"Together they have a vast, in-depth knowledge of Territory history and heritage, which will be used to assess future applicants in programs that are so important to documenting our unique Territory history.

"I thank the new members for making themselves available for the register, which is critical to the success of both programs."
