The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the National Innovation Center par Excellence (NICE) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 2 June 2026 to establish a strategic framework for collaboration in technology innovation, commercialisation, applied research, and talent development. This agreement marks a significant milestone in strengthening innovation connections between Hong Kong and the Yangtze River Delta, reflecting both parties' shared commitment to translating cutting-edge research into real-world applications with impactful industrial and societal benefits.
The signing ceremony was held on the first day of the Global Industrial Technology Innovation Conference in Shanghai. It was officiated by Professor Alice Wong, Associate Vice-President (Research) of HKU, and Qing Liu, President of NICE. This partnership aims to foster technological innovation and industrial R&D capabilities across both regions while creating a seamless pipeline for collaboration between leading academic institutions and national innovation centres.

Under the MoU, HKU and NICE will work together to build a vibrant innovation ecosystem by launching joint research projects in key strategic areas, including Advanced Materials, information and Communication Technology (ICT), Energy and Environmental Protection, Manufacturing and Equipment, and Biology and Medicine, while developing talent training initiatives that link academic strengths with real market needs. The two parties will also strengthen commercialisation and sustainable startup growth through a series of seminars, workshops, and forums, to connect researchers with industry leaders, entrepreneurs, and investors. Through its commercial arm Versitech, HKU will also continue to collaborate closely with NICE to explore opportunities in startup development, market access, and investment, ensuring breakthrough research reaches full commercial potential and contributes to the community.
