Hobart City Deal: spin over substance

Tasmanian Labor
  • Another media event on the much-maligned Hobart City Deal
  • Unrealistic timelines and underfunding detailed in "implementation plan"
  • Liberals have no long term plan for Greater Hobart infrastructure
  • The Hobart City Deal implementation plan released today is full of pretty pictures but light on real progress for Greater Hobart.

Shadow Infrastructure Minister Shane Broad said that southern Tasmania deserves more than just another media event.

"The Hobart City Deal is mutton dressed up as lamb," Dr Broad said.

"It's a shopping list of Federal, State and Local Government projects chucked into a glossy brochure to disguise the fact that the Liberals have done nothing in six years and have no long term strategy for Hobart infrastructure.

"The Liberals have promised yet again that the Bridgewater Bridge will be complete by 2024 but Will Hodgman and Michael Ferguson can't even get the design right to get construction underway.

"Despite former Minister Rene Hidding saying Hobart Light Rail could be delivered by 2023, today's announcement does nothing to deliver this project.

"There is still no clear answer on whether they will force Antarctic jobs out of Kingborough or any significant progress to tackle Tasmania's housing and homelessness crisis.

"Frankly, the Hobart City Deal is becoming an embarrassment and Tasmanians deserve better."

    Shane Broad MP

    Shadow Infrastructure Minister
