Hodgman Government failing on child safety

Tasmanian Labor
  • Government must prioritise keeping children and young people safe
  • System failures must be analysed and made public
  • Child safety shouldn't face more Liberal cuts
  • In Question Time today, Will Hodgman failed to answer a number of questions about serious incidents or deaths of five children who were known to the child safety system.

Five reports have been handed to the Coroner by the Serious Events Review Team, a cross agency unit that reviews Roger Jaensch's department.

Shadow Minister for Child Safety Josh Willie said the Hodgman Government had an appalling record when it comes to child safety.

"There is no more important job than keeping children and young people safe," Mr Willie said.

"We know that there have been a number of serious incidents over recent years but the Government is determined to keep any system failures top secret.

"At the same time Will Hodgman is cutting $450 million from essential services and frontline jobs, he has failed to quarantine Communities Tasmania and its Child Safety Service.

"It is clear from his performance in Parliament today that Will Hodgman was not across important details.

"Tasmanians deserve much better than a Premier who refuses to answer whilst delivering cuts to an already stretched Child Safety Service."

Josh Willie MLC – Shadow Minister for Child Safety
