Hokkaido University 7th Globally in 2026 Sustainability Ratings

We are delighted to announce that Hokkaido University has been ranked 7th in the world among over 1,600 universities in THE Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026, the highest ranking it has ever received. In addition, Hokkaido University has been 1st in Japan for the seventh consecutive year in the overall rankings.

Developed by Times Higher Education (THE) in the UK, THE Sustainability Impact Ratings evaluates universities' contributions to the UN SDGs. THE Impact Rankings was launched in 2019, and it was renamed THE Sustainability Impact Ratings this year.

Out of the 17 SDG targets, this year Hokkaido University ranks No. 1 in Japan for the following SDG goals as well:

  • SDG 2: Zero Hunger
  • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
  • SDG 14: Life Below Water
  • SDG 15: Life on Land
  • SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions
  • SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals
