Honourable John Myles Bennett

Will Hodgman,Premier

On behalf of the Tasmanian Liberal Government, I extend sincere condolences to the family of the Honourable John Myles Bennett.

A lawyer and a larger than life personality, John served as Liberal Member for Denison between 1986 and 1990 and served as Attorney-General in the Gray Liberal Government.

In his maiden speech, John dedicated the majority of his time to advocating for the Port Arthur conservation and development project, the forerunner to the establishment of Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority.

John, never afraid to stand up for Tasmania's interests, understood the potential we now all see at the Port Arthur Historic Site and recognised the importance that Tasmania's tourism industry would play in the economic future of our state.

Outside of politics and the law, John served many years as a football administrator and on numerous boards following his retirement.

My thoughts are with John's family at this time.
