Attending the 70th Founding Day of the German Armed Forces at the German Embassy was already a significant occasion for Corporal Martina Bruessow, but the day became truly unforgettable when her name was called to receive the German Medal of Honour.

The recognition - presented in front of senior military representatives and diplomats - acknowledged her professionalism, dedication and significant contribution to strengthening international cooperation as the Country Liaison Officer, supporting the German contingent during Exercises Pitch Black 2022 (PBK22) and 2024 (PBK24).

Corporal Bruessow, a medical technician from 2 Expeditionary Health Squadron Darwin Detachment, stated she was genuinely taken by surprise when her name was called to receive the prestigious award.

"My work as a Country Liaison Officer for PBK22 and PBK24 was driven by service and professionalism, not by any expectation of recognition," Corporal Bruessow said.

"To be acknowledged in this way, especially on such an important anniversary, was profoundly meaningful."

The award recognised Corporal Bruessow's outstanding contribution to international cooperation during two major exercises, PBK22 and PBK24. In her role as Country Liaison Officer for the German contingent, she ensured seamless integration into the exercise framework, supporting both operational and cultural engagement.

'Working with the German contingent felt like coming home.'

Her efforts were pivotal in overcoming complex logistical challenges, including navigating declarations, regulations and border requirements.

Corporal Bruessow highlighted key moments that defined her experience, including witnessing multinational unity during a major incident in PBK24 and participating in international nights, which celebrated cultural diversity and strengthened friendships beyond the exercise.

"Seeing such collaboration in action reaffirmed the power of collective effort," Corporal Bruessow said.

As a German-born member of the Royal Australian Air Force, the role carried personal significance.

"Working with the German contingent felt like coming home," she said.

"This opportunity opened up a new world for me. The experience broadened my perspective and allowed me to grow both professionally and personally."

Receiving the German Medal of Honour was not just a personal achievement for Corporal Bruessow, it reflected the collective professionalism and dedication of the teams she worked alongside.

"I remain sincerely appreciative of their support and proud of what we accomplished together," she said.
