On this Remembrance Day, we pause to honour the courage, sacrifice, and enduring service of all who have served, and continue to serve, in the Australian Defence Force. Their unwavering commitment to peace and freedom remains a guiding light for our nation.
We remember with deep gratitude the men and women who gave their lives in conflicts past and present. Among them are remarkable Territorians whose stories continue to inspire us. Two soldiers from the NT who embodied the spirit of resilience and selflessness that defines our defence force are Lieutenant Albert Borella, awarded the Victoria Cross for extraordinary bravery during the First World War, and Lance Corporal Frederick Prentice, a First Nations soldier who served with distinction on the Western Front.
We also acknowledge the families who carry the legacy of their loved ones' service. Their strength and sacrifice remind us of the true cost of freedom.
The Northern Territory has long played a vital role in Australia's defence, from the high enlistment rates during World War I, to today's proud service as a home to NORFORCE, RAAF Bases Darwin and Tindal, and our naval and army barracks. Territorians continue to serve wherever they are needed, at home and abroad.
As we gather in reflection at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, let us renew our commitment to the values for which so many have fought: unity, compassion, and peace.
Lest we forget.
