Hooray for our firies

Anthony was in town when he received the phone call of a large fire at his property in Bees Creek on Monday night.

Thanks to his quick acting neighbour, NT Fire and Rescue Service crews were called and by the time he arrived on site more than 30 minutes later, there were several fire crews fighting the fire.

“I spoke to the young man manning the water truck and he gave me a quick and concise overview of the situation,” said Anthony.

“I communicated with as many of the teams as possible to give them directions around the property to keep them and their equipment safe, but to be perfectly honest it was like they had been there before and knew exactly where to go and what to do, in the dark no less!

“They were taking all precautions to keep themselves and the property safe, communicating with each other, they were extremely calm, very professional and very well trained.

“To say I was impressed watching them go about the work is an understatement. I cannot tell you how grateful and relieved I was to see these teams of career fighters, along with so many amazing and selfless volunteer firefighters, coming to help me at my property, some of whom told me they had only just finished work themselves or were having dinner with their families and had to race off, so that my property and the people that live there and the surrounding areas could be protected.”

Chief Fire Officer Mark Spain AFSM said, “This is a great example of what we encourage our community to do as we head into bushfire season. Make sure your fire breaks are in place and maintained and have a survival plan in place.

“As we move into what is shaping up as a busy fire season, I just want to acknowledge both our career and volunteer firefighters for the great work they continue to perform across the NT and serving our community.”
