
Federation Council has approved a significant change to heavy vehicle access in Howlong's residential areas, replacing the current 4.5-tonne (t) restriction with a 14-metre vehicle length limit. This action, endorsed following a thorough review and recommendation from the Local Traffic Committee (LTC) and Transport for NSW (TfNSW), aims to improve road safety, address inconsistent signage, and ensure appropriate access for local deliveries.
The decision affects Holbeach Street and all associated residential streets in Howlong.
The review was initiated following resident concerns about increased heavy vehicle volumes and subsequent safety investigations which identified that the right-hand turn for larger vehicles at the Holbeach St and Riverina Highway intersection was unsuitable. The move from a weight restriction to a length restriction is designed to more effectively manage vehicle maneuverability and road suitability.
Federation Council Mayor, Cr Cheryl Cook praised the collaborative and considered approach of the 18-month review process.
"Safety is our number one priority, and this decision is a great example of Council listening to our residents and working with experts like Transport for NSW to find a practical solution," Mayor Cook said.
"Moving to a 14-metre length limit is a common-sense change. The old tonnage restriction was overly restrictive for essential local vehicles, like school buses and material delivery trucks for our new residential developments. This new length limit directly targets the oversized vehicles that pose a safety risk, particularly with challenging turns like the one identified at Riverina Highway and Holbeach Street. It took 18 months of deliberation, but we have landed on a solution that balances residential amenity and safety with the essential needs of our local businesses and growing community. We encourage all drivers to pay close attention to the new signage as it is installed."

Exemption: Vehicles accessing a specific business site on Holbeach Street are exempt from this restriction, provided the driver carries a valid manifest or delivery document as proof of destination.
