A purpose-built home for Lalor United Sloga Football Club and a welcoming space for locals to get active will be created in the heart of Thomastown, thanks to a $4.2 million Council investment to redevelop the pavilion, pitch and car park at HR Uren Recreation Reserve.
Marking a major boost for grassroots sport, the existing pavilion and car park will be extended to include a new function space and kitchen for club events, spectator viewing area, a first aid room, and car park lighting.
Chair Administrator Lydia Wilson said that with soccer participation growing almost 25 per cent in the City of Whittlesea over the last five years, the redevelopment of HR Uren Recreation Reserve will provide opportunities for more people to get involved in the popular sport and enjoy all the benefits of being part of an inclusive and supportive community.
"Council is focused on creating and maintaining premium sports facilities that encourage our residents to lead healthy and active lifestyles," Ms Wilson said.
"With more than 250 members at Lalor United Sloga Football Club, we're excited to see the club thrive in the new facility, and I look forward to seeing local residents to make use of the new grounds for some year-round exercise."
Council is in the final stages of constructing a new FIFA-approved synthetic pitch at HR Uren Recreation Reserve. Construction of the pitch will be complete in April 2022.
Construction of the community pavilion is due to start in April 2022 and is expected to be complete by late-2023.
