Hundreds Of New Homes In Inner City

VIC Premier

The Allan Labor Government has approved nearly 500 new homes across Melbourne's Docklands and Southbank - providing more choice for Victorians to live close to public transport, jobs and services.

Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny has approved two projects that will together deliver 483 new homes, helping more people live close to where they work, study and connect with the city.

The project at Lorimer Street in Docklands, will deliver 303 new homes - including a mix of one, two and three-bedroom homes as well as new ground-floor retail spaces.

These new homes will be located close to public transport, shared walking and cycling paths, the Docklands waterfront, and employment precincts.

The development at Sturt Street in Southbank will deliver 180 new homes - including a mix of studio, one, two and three-bedroom homes, as well as a new retail space, a hospitality space, and two customisable creative arts spaces.

The Sturt Street homes will be close to public transport, the Malthouse Theatre, Melbourne's arts and cultural precinct, including the Royal Botanic Gardens, the Shrine, and the National Gallery of Victoria.

These projects will deliver more homes where people want to live - close to transport, education, culture and employment - while supporting strong, vibrant inner-city communities.

The latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show Victoria continues to approve and build thousands of more homes than any other state.

The Labor Government continues to deliver on its bold housing reforms that are about giving Victorians real housing choice - more opportunities to live in the communities they love.

These reforms include overhauling outdated planning laws, fast tracking good developments, slashing stamp duty on eligible off-the-plan homes, setting housing targets for every council, delivering more homes near public transport, making it easier to subdivide, and simplifying townhouse and duplex approvals.

As stated by Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny

"We're approving hundreds of new homes in Docklands and Southbank so more Victorians can live closer to jobs, public transport and the services they rely on."

"Whether it's apartments and townhouses in our inner suburbs or family homes in our greenfields, we're making it easier to build more homes to give more Victorians real housing choice."
